We are happy to do this for 20,000Ksh per day for a group of up to 25 students (dirt cheap if you have priced such services). In this way we can review blueprints, discuss project management issues, show practical demonstrations, relate what went well, what we would do differently.

Date: 1st Saturday every month 10am - 2pm, by Appointment onlySchool groups, farmer groups and College outreach classes are some of the groups that visit regularly for a Farm Tour or for a specific study topic such as 'bees' or 'compost making'. We welcome and encourage groups to visit, as the farm is intended to be a demonstration site where people of all ages and skills can learn. Tours can still go ahead if it is raining. Please ensure your guests have appropriate outdoors clothing; gumboots and raincoats for wet weather and closed toe shoes, and sun hats for hot weather

1. Introduction to Permaculture
This long weekend gives a snapshot of a Permaculture Design Course (PDC) and is a valuable launch pad for sustainability. You are introduced to the principles, ethics and techniques of permaculture and sustainable design for gardens, farms, homes and units and waste reuse. We inspect appropriately designed structures and growing systems on Evergreen Plains Farm and solve some design challenges. Participants will do a group design and implement it as an element of the food forest at Evergreen Plains Farm.
2. Introduction to Agro-Processing
This hands-on workshop will give practical instruction in aspects of pressing oils, drying, packaging and preserving techniques. This course will take you back to the Garden of Eden and the creation o flife to bring the greatest of soil building practices to our gardens and farms. Learn how to identify and use the best plants for maing your bio-pesticide and also what inpits are best for making your own bio-fertilizers. Includes practicals on making liquid fertilizer. Successful compl=ost making relies on the ingredients and the method just as it does in making cake. We will give you the recipe for great compost on this 3 days course that shares a session on thoery with practical exercises.
3. Mandala Gardens
The weekend course will take participants through setting up and running a Mandala garden. The Evergreen Plains Farm Mandala garden serves to produce Natural Medicine for our Residents both human and animal. It is adaptable to almost any situation and any scale of production from horticulture to backyard gardens.
4. Sourdough Bread
Learn about sourdough starters and processes of establishing the ‘mother’ plant that are crucial to making sourdough and other products using the sourdough method. Take home sourdough bread recipes and practice hands on bread making techniques of mixing, hand moulding and shaping.
5. Introduction to Bee Keeping
This long weekend gives participants the basic knowledge and techniques in handling bees and processing bee products. Topics covered include: Honey Bee Management; History and importance of bee farming; bee farming systems; colony cycles; honey bee communications and physiology; bee tools and equipment; bee plants; honey bee behaviour; importance of bees; pollination; honey bee products; bee challenges; pests; predators; diseases; pesticides; climate change; and practicals in the Evergreen Plains Farm including setting hives for swarm catching, designing a modified Langsthroth Beehive, identifying bee plants and opening a colonized hive.
6. Advanced Bee Keeping
This long weekend gives participants advanced knowledge and techniques in handling bees and processing bee products. Topics covered include: queen rearing; and practicals in the Evergreen Plains Farm including building a modified Langsthroth Beehive, harvesting honey, making bees wax candles, collecting pollen, harvesting royal jelly and soap making.
7. Compost Making
This course will take you back to the Garden of Eden and the creation of life to bring the greatest of soil building practices to our gardens and farms. Successful compost making relies on the ingredients and the method just as it does in making a cake. We will give you the recipe for great compost on this full day course that shares a session on theory with practical exercises.
8. Nursery Management, Grafting & Propagation
Growing plants from seed is rewarding, but a lack of success can be frustrating. At Evergreen Plains Farm we raise our seedlings for the garden and will show you the things you need to do to successfully raise your own food and flowers from scratch. Learn how to develop practical skills in the grafting of fruit trees in this short course. Experience will be gained in the use of a grafting knife.
9. Worm Farming
This short course aims to give participants the skills to successfully keep compost worms. The ability of worms to recycle household waste into perfect plant food without any real fuss makes this a worthwhile endeavour for any urban setting. We look at housing and feeding worms, how to use worm castings and worm tea in food production.
10. Dairy Cow and Goat Rearing & Management
Learn about rearing Cows and Goats in Sub Saharan Africa and get hands of experience with pest control, hoof and horn trimming, milking and much more.
11. Natural Medicine
Learn how to recognize and cultivate several medicinal plants in a medicinal garden. Learn methods of hygienic production of effective Natural Medicines from these plants, e.g. teas, different medicinal oils and ointments and tinctures. We will also produce different soaps, medicinal charcoal, black stones for snake-bites and learn how to use several simple technologies.You will learn the treatments of many medical complaints and diseases, including malaria, skin problems, diarrhoea, HIV/AIDS and wounds. Following the course, participants will be able to: create their own garden of medicinal plants; prepare their own natural medicines; treat themselves, their families and others within their area of competence, and teach their families, colleagues and others in their communities.
12. Natural Building
This 10 day long course gives participants knowledge in building structures using such materials as cob, straw bale, natural plasters and timber frame. During the course participants will learn to integrate natural resources into the environment using solar hot water, rainwater catchment and wastewater management among other forms of sustainable building practices. During the week we will build various components of a Natural Building House including lighting and plumbing.
